SUMMER WORK AND TRAVEL USA - FINDING AN EMPLOYER IN THE US

This is not as difficult as you might at first think! Many US employers rely on international students to help them out during the busy summer season.

As a student in the UK you have certain advantages:

You’re coming on a J-1 visa and so the US employer can take you on in the same way they would an American. In other words there is no hassle or extra cost to the employer!
Many people in the US are pre-disposed to like and favour anything British – especially the accent! You’ll get tired of hearing people ask you to say things again because they love the ‘cute’ accent!
You already speak English!
It is very much in your interest to bear all this in mind when you approach a US employer. It will increase your prospects tremendously!

WHERE TO START

There are a number of websites that offer introductions to summer work in the USA. Try a ‘google’ search to identify some of these.
A good place to start is somewhere like Coolworks (www.coolworks.com) (page will open in new window)

The Careers Service at your university will have information and resources you can use. There is published material for summer work in the USA and your university’s Career Service may well be especially well-equipped with some of this.

Networking is an excellent way of finding jobs. If you have any friends or relatives in the US contact them! Knowing someone who knows someone is often the most effective way of finding a job.

Contact IST Plus at info@istplus.com and ask for advice. We can direct you to some websites and even some companies and organisations we have sent participants to in the past.

CIEE has a database of employers. However, you have to join the programme first (by sending in your application form and programme fee) before you can gain access to it and there is a £100 fee for jobs secured via this database.

Finally, if you are a UK passport holder it is possible to get your J-1 visa and go to the US before you have actually found your job but we don’t recommend this course of action unless you are very self-confident and resourceful!
