  • The Position
    As the lead classroom teacher your goal will be to improve the conversational English skills of your students. Through creative classroom exercises and educational games, your native English abilities and cultural savvy will improve the verbal competence of your eager Thai students.

    Your participation on the Teach in Thailand program will help to support English language education for Thai students. As a foreign teacher you’ll be promoting a healthy exchange of cultures and empathy for Thai students, teachers, and the greater community all while gaining awareness of Thai people, culture, and language through this unique immersion experience.
  • The students
    Participants will teach English to students of all ages; most assignments are at the secondary level (grades 7-12) but there are often openings teaching kindergarten and primary aged learners.
  • Workload
    A typical teaching load is 22 classes per week, depending on the school. In addition to actual time spent in the classroom, participants are expected to devote time to class planning, presentations, faculty meetings, and a modicum of extra-curricular activities. Participants should assume a 35-40 work week.

Positions are available at both private and government schools in areas all around Thailand but a significant number of our partner schools are located in the Bangkok vicinity, and central and northern provinces of Thailand. We do not place anyone in the southern provinces of Narathiwat, Pattani, Yala, Satun, and Songkhla.

You can request placement at a particular level and preferred location, though placements are driven by the demand for English-speaking teachers and the requirements of each host institution, so IST Plus cannot guarantee that all requests will be honoured.

Earning at least 18,000 baht per month, Teach in Thailand participants have a high standard of living while in Thailand. Host institutions provide comfortable accommodations and the cost of living in Thailand is very low. The salary may not seem particularly high by Western terms, but it is generous in local terms—about twice what local teachers earn—and wages can easily finance independent travel after the semester.

There are two start dates each year for the Teach in Thailand Programme

May Departure

  • 5 month programme - £850
  • 10 month programme - £900

October Departure

  • 5 month programme - £895
  • 10 month programme - £995
Your programme fee covers many things related to preparing, training, and supporting your experience. This includes valuable program support pre-departure and in-country. We are your reference board and problem solvers should you need advice or assistance. Additionally, your program fee covers your pre-departure school assignment, an in-country orientation program, one-way transfer from orientation to your host school, programme handbook, teaching guides and tools, assistance with visa acquisition, and full time housing.
Host institutions provide furnished accommodations that are compliant with Western expectations. Rent-free living combined with the reasonable cost of living in China allow earnings to go a long way!

Rent-free accommodations are provided for all participants for the duration of their contract. They vary from apartments to faculty housing, but usually include a bedroom, bath, sitting room, and limited kitchen facilities. In some cases, Internet access may be available for an additional fee, otherwise access should be available on campus or in Internet cafés.

IST Plus and Overseas Education Group select qualified individuals to become our teachers abroad and provide services for fees. We would do our research before paying to go abroad, and you should too! To choose a program that can help you work toward accomplishing your personal or professional goals, always consider what opportunities are available for the price, remembering that costs are not always financial. If getting a paid position overseas were a snap, everyone would do it. If you can make it happen on your own and you are comfortable with the risks involved in doing so, take the challenge! For those who have not taught overseas before or are simply looking for more advice, experience, and support, we look forward to working with you.

Ask yourself what it might cost to live overseas for a semester or year without a guaranteed salary. Add the cost of housing or the time and energy necessary to solve problems with little or no support and it becomes clear why people choose to teach English abroad with CIEE. All participants take an active part in a weeklong orientation program in Bangkok that is conducted by our partner in Thailand, the Overseas Educational Group (OEG).

OEG is a reputable educational organisation in Thailand with whom IST Plus has partnered with for many years.
During this week you will get to know the OEG staff well and build a relationship with their support network that is available to you throughout your time in Thailand. OEG can help you solve everyday problems while at school, work your way through cultural issues, or even provide travel advice for your weekend destinations. In case of emergency, they are also there for you.

Your new friends at OEG are only part of it—wait until you meet your fellow Teachers—all embarking on similar adventures at your side! During the week, relationships are forged , travel plans made, and visits promised. You will leave for your teaching placement with connections throughout Thailand!

Before you go, it will be necessary to obtain a single entry non-immigrant B visa for Thailand. This is your entry permit and we will work with you to acquire it before you depart for Thailand. You will have to fill out the proper forms that are available online, get a police background clearance check, and apply for the visa. We will assist and guide throughout this process.

After you arrive at your Thai school, your institution will coordinate all legal documentation associated with working in Thailand and assist with obtaining the correct paperwork which will be your work permit.

Staying legal in Thailand is very important! In-country staff will update you on what you need to do to maintain your visa status while in Thailand and what you need to do if you exit and re-enter.

Note: Due to Thai visa processing constraints, it will be necessary for you to submit your passport and supporting documents for processing approximately six weeks prior to the program start date. You should not have plans to use your passport between this date and your departure for Thailand.

    Throughout the application process, skilled CIEE staff members are here to walk you through the steps and answer your questions. We ensure that you have everything you need to teach abroad, from visa guidance to teaching position information.
  • In-country support
    Beyond the four day orientation and mid-year workshop, CIEE provides you with 24 hour in-country emergency support services from OEG staff.

You do not have to be a teacher with extensive international experience to apply! Whether your major was art history, zoology, or anything in between; if you have a good attitude and solid work ethic, your academic background will serve you well in the classroom—this time from the teacher’s side of the desk.

IST Plus and our partner Thai schools are looking for well-rounded applicants who are independent, adventurous, and who adapt well to new situations. Participants must be able to expect the unexpected and thrive in a changing environment! It’s essential that participants are self-motivated, responsible, and recognise that their first priority is to their school and their teaching assignment. 110% commitment to the program is essential.

  • No, but an interest in teaching is necessary. You will receive some training in the theories and practical application of Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) during your orientation prior to the start of the program. Applicants who would like more experience in the area of teaching are encouraged to sign up for the Teach in Thailand + TEFL options. IST Plus encourages candidates with TEFL or teaching experience/certification, English degrees, and other transferrable skills to apply as they are highly desirable by Thai schools.

  • You may submit a preference of teaching location but IST Plus cannot guarantee that we will be able to honour your request. Final hiring decisions are made by the Thai schools, not by IST Plus or our partner OEG. Please keep in mind that flexibility is key to having an enjoyable experience. The earlier you apply to CIEE the better chance you have of receiving your desired location.

  • Placement locations are driven by the demand of local schools and do vary each departure. In general we offer school placements in the Bangkok area, as well as other cities, towns, and rural areas except in the far southern provinces.

  • Yes! We are very successful at placing friends and couples together at the same institution in Thailand. Each applicant should include a note with their application materials. When possible, please send in complete applications together and include this information in the body of your email with application materials attached.

  • We are unable to accommodate non-teaching family members or friends on Teach in Thailand. Eligible candidates are encouraged to apply for a placement teaching at the same school.

  • You must have secured your degree prior to beginning the IST Plus Teach in Thailand programme. However, you can apply while your degree is in progress. If this is your case, please submit a letter from a university professor, advisor, or registrar confirming when you are expected to graduate. Please address your specific situation with IST Plus staff.

    Special note: Due to the strict Thai government regulation requiring foreign teachers to bring their actual university diplomas to Thailand, spring graduates are eligible for the October, not the May, program departure. In sync with the Thai academic calendar, the May program generally begins the first weekend of the month which is generally prior to graduation. December graduates are eligible for the May program keeping in mind that they must verify they will receive their diploma prior to departure in early May.

  • No. In fact, most schools prefer that their foreign teachers are very foreign. However, having some knowledge of the local language will benefit your day-to-day life.

  • Due to the demand for native English speaking teachers in Thailand we strive to accept as many qualified applicants as possible. However, acceptance rates do fluctuate with the changing demand by local schools; sometimes CIEE is forced to create a waitlist. Applicants are considered on a rolling basis in the order that complete applications are received. Early applications are encouraged.

  • No, travel arrangements are made independent of us. You are encouraged to book your flights after your school placement has been confirmed. Travel from orientation in Bangkok to your school will be arranged.
