TIMELINES FOR THE J1 INTERN OR TRAINEE VISA
There are various different stages in the process of getting a J1 visa to the US! We think it is important that our participants understand what is involved, so please see below a typical timeline for the process of securing either an Internship visa or Professional Career Training Trainee visa (for Summer Work and Travel and Camp USA the process is slightly faster - please contact info@istplus.com for further information). To allow for all stages we recommend you submit your application AT LEAST 6 WEEKS IN ADVANCE OF THE DATE YOU PLAN TO TRAVEL TO THE USA - in busy seasons such as the summer you should allow more due to extensive wait times at the US Embassy!The process:
- We receive the completed application and payment from you
- We check the application to make sure everything is complete - if not we contact you via email
- As long as the application and DS-7002 Training Plan are complete, we upload the application into the US systems
- Our colleagues in the US verify the details of your programme
- Our colleagues in the USA contact your American Host Company
- Once your Host Company has been contacted, and any revisions to the plan have been made, CIEE are able to authorise and print your legal documentation
- CIEE then send these to our offices in the UK
- We then send them to you (along with your handbook and insurance documentation) via 1st class post
- You are then able to book your interview at the US Embassy
- Once you have had your interview, the embassy will return your passport and visa to you (normally within 5 working days)
- You are then free to travel to the US on or soon after the date you gave on your application as your departure date
- Once in the USA, you have 20 days to register within the US Government SEVIS system (information on how to do this is given in your handbook, online orientation and welcome documents)
